Their stories impact our lives in the most positive ways, and we strive to impact theirs by providing a safe, fun environment full of adventure and activities made just for them. At Jills House, our staff are the people that make our mission work. In addition to being highly trained, they are loving and committed to the children and families that we serve. Our network of over 200 active volunteers allows us to leverage our resources to keep our respite care affordable so that cost does not prohibit a family from coming to Jills House. It is because of staff and volunteer commitment and expertise that we are able to maintain such high levels of service and expand our model for respite.

For fourteen years, the short-term overnight respite care at Jill’s House has been transforming the lives of families raising children with special needs. Jill’s House is a respite for all children with intellectual disabilities and their families, without regard to race, religion, or ethnicity from ages six to seventeen. Regularly throughout the year, parents send their children with intellectual disabilities to our “respite resort” in Vienna, VA, or to one of our camp locations around the country for hour stays. The kids get an amazing experience in a safe, fun, loving, and celebratory environment.

We also have our 42,000-square foot, 45-bed respite resort in the Washington D.C. Built entirely through the generosity of those who believe in our mission, our facility has a fully accessible indoor swimming pool, craft and music rooms, a library, multi-sensory rooms, and an outdoor playground with wheelchair accessible swing! This facility allows us to give our guests experiences that they may never have otherwise. We have also built partnerships with local churches and camps in several communities around the country, which allows us to provide children with similar experiences during a fun weekend away at camp. Jills House seeks to provide overnight respite to families of children with intellectual disabilities.

Jill’s House was founded in 2019 by LA-based DJ and dancer Juliet Mendoza, who saw the lack of womxn/POC representation in the scene and the need to create opportunity to further represent our community. Jill’s House is a Christian Nonprofit organization that provides families raising kids with intellectual disabilities, ages 6-17, with short-term overnight respite care in the DC metro area and around the country. We authentically love all children that come to Jill’s House and their families.

And if other children—with or without disabilities—are involved, the strains are that much greater. Always, there is the tension on relationships between spouses, siblings, parents and children, or all of those. Love or not, sometimes special families just need some time apart.

Music is the core of our lives -- we live and breathe this shit -- and for many of us, it’s saved our lives. We wanted to create a space for marginalized to shine/have a platform/amplify their voices. Caring for kids with intellectual disabilities is complex and at times can feel like a full time job.

After the dinner concluded, two protesters holding a sign saying “Stop Israel's genocide” entered the hotel's red carpet area as guests were departing. While the dinner, a tradition dating back 100 years, played out inside the ballroom, hundreds of protesters mobilized outside the venue to call for a cease-fire and criticize Biden's response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Celebrities who went to Saturday's event included Scarlett Johansson, who is married to Jost, as well as Rachel Brosnahan and Quavo. High-profile politicians and administration officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., attended as well. We exist to love families toward Jesus and reduce their stress by providing long breaks for families of children with intellectual disabilities. We hope to change the face of disability ministry in America by ensuring that every family of a child with an intellectual disability has respite within reach and a connection to a church that embraces them. Jill’s House is named for a very special young lady, born in 1992, who was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome—a rare seizure disorder. Jill’s parents’ lives changed when a friend stepped in and introduced them to the concept of respite. Respite provided an occasional break for Jill’s parents to spend time with their children and with each other, or simply to sleep. The difference respite careShort-term care for a child or adult that allows the primary caregiver relief.

These families face challenges above and beyond the average family. From higher levels of stress, to feelings of isolation, they just need room to breathe. We provide these families with important time to rest, and give their children a safe, fun environment, tailored to their unique abilities.

The existence of Jills House, the physical building and the long-term respite program, is an achievement in and of itself, which required the work of hundreds of dedicated people to lead the effort, along with the generosity of many partners. Since opening, we have provided over 600,000 hours of respite (which is 57.5 years!) to over 700 unique families. Our overnight respite programs consistently show positive outcomes in the lives of our families, with an average stress reduction after only one night of 72%.

We offer care for the whole family through regularly scheduled typical sibling nights, parent support groups, and family retreats. Through partnerships with local schools, we are able to offer weeknight overnight care at our main location. Jill’s House staff picks up children after school and returns them the next day, providing 36 hours of weeknight respite for caregivers. Our goal is to ensure every family of a child with an intellectual disability has respite within their reach. Metropolitan area and reaching families around the country through our Weekend Adventure camp model. While rest is important, we also seek to be a resource for these families and create opportunities for them to be in community with each other and have a greater support structure.

As curator, Hayashi Smith will oversee the care of thousands of artifacts in the White House collection, cataloguing and preserving everything from presidential portraits to furniture and more. Washington’s annual mashup of political humor and earnest paeans to the free press is typically a good-natured collection of one-liners and affectionate jabs at friends and enemies alike. But it was the leading 2024 presidential contenders who loomed largest — one in the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom, the other who definitely, positively, probably was not watching from Mar-a-Lago. U.S. Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that “attendees can expect layered security and screening at the dinner,” adding that there would be “intermittent” road closures near the venue.
